D. Virgil Alfaro, III, M.D.

Dr. Alfaro provides a highly unique professional background in medical facility development. He combines a proven track record of success in developing highly complex outpatient services with clinical and surgical experience with patients. This has made him “the go to developer and doctor” for physicians seeking advice and direction for their medical projects in the Charleston, S.C. market. He is the founding partner of Retina Consultants of Charleston, LLC, the largest vitreoretinal practice in the South Carolina.

A Veteran of the USAF Medical Corps

Dr. Alfaro was commissioned as a Second Liutenant in the United States Air Force in 1984. He performed activity duty tours and cared for patients at Lackland AFB, Travis AFB, Vandeburg AFB, Maxwell AFB and was assigned to the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD. Dr. Alfaro has cared for and performed surgery on activity duty personel, veterans, and their dependents at numerous military and Veteran Administration facilities at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Bethesda Medical Center, Andrews Air Force Base, Los Angeles Veterans Administration Clinic, West Haven Veterans Administration Clinic, and veterans of the Charleston area.

Committed to the Community

Dr. Alfaro has been dedicated to the advancement of medicine in the Spanish-speaking world and has trained international physicians from Mexico, Venezuela, Argentina, Spain, and Columbia. This has been done through a fellowship program organized and led by him.
Dr. Alfaro has co-authored, co-edited, and published 8 highly technical textbooks on vitreoretinal surgery. His textbook on diabetic retinopathy was published in Spanish and distributed throughout the Latin America.
He is actively involved in the Spanish club at his Alma Mater, The Citadel, and continues to mentor students who are seeking healthcare professions.
To address inequality of African American students, Dr. Alfaro funds a summer internship that provides a stipend and an environment to foster personal growth for black students seeking a career in health care.

Background

Virgil Alfaro hails south Texas and graduate from the Marine Military Academy, in Harlingen, Texas. A 1984 graduate of The Citadel, he obtained his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College. After interning at the University of California, Los Angeles, he completed a residency in ophthalmology at the Los Angeles County Hospital. He performed his fellowship in retinal diseases at Yale University.

He is the son of attorney Dan Alfaro, a Vietnam War Veteran and civil rights attorney in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Dr. Alfaro is married to Marcia Alfaro and they have three children.
